How to Maintain and Clean Your Coir Door Mat

Coir entrance matting is highly absorbent, can be personalized and appears natural, so it is a very popular form of entrance mat. However, like all matting, it does need a good clean from time to time to ensure the performance is acceptable. As a more environmentally friendly alternative, Coir Mats are becoming increasingly popular for offices, schools and other business premises to fit into their doorways.

How to Clean Your Coir Doormat

Cold and wet months are hard on your doormat. Snow, salt, and mud are removed at the door and insist on pushing the boundaries of your coir doormat. To keep your coir doormat in good shape for years to come, it's important that you learn how to take care of it.

To clean a coir doormat, first remove as much of the dirt and debris as you can see. If necessary, you can use an instrument to scrape with. Suspend the doormat outside and beat with a broom handle or equivalent. Do it over grass or dirt, not your driveway or porch, since there can be a tremendous amount of dirt wedged between the fibers. Utilize water and a hard-bristle brush to sweep off the dirt particles. Finally, place your doormat on a hard surface outside where it can bask in sunlight and dry off. Overall, you should be cleaning your doormat each week with a simple shakedown method.

If you already clean your porch, incorporate this. Take your coir door mat and shake it onto your lawn. You may also vacuum the mat to brush away too much dirt at once. Check your doormat monthly to ensure that it is still in its original condition. You need to do these steps at least once a season. Coir is an eco-friendly way to meet a lot of home demands. The coarse and stiff threads of this naturally tough and long-lasting material make it a great option for carpets, rugs, and doormats. If you want sustainability and lifespan, coir carpets are an excellent option because of their natural defenses towards water, tension, and salt, as well as the antifungal and antibacterial qualities they possess.

For maintenance of the functionality of your coir fiber entrance matting and keeping it live for a longer duration, we would suggest you to clean your coir mats at regular intervals.

Daily Care

Strive to eliminate dry dirt from your coir fiber entrance matting using an industrial vacuum cleaner equipped with driven rotating brush or a domestic vacuum cleaner equipped with Class C extraction of dust from carpet.

  • Let wet areas dry completely and treat as dry ground.
  • Regular vacuuming of your coir entrance matting loosens the dirt nicely and extracts it. Your Coir Door  Mats will remain clean and fresh and will remain effective.
  • The dirt can be beaten out of loose laid coir fiber mats outdoors.
  • Colored coir yarn is a natural fiber made up of cellulose, which is dyed with eco-friendly colors.

If a coir outdoor door mat is wet to excess, e.g., through excessively wet cleaning or snow, the color can run. Clean coir mats only by vacuum or gentle stick beating, and clear snow at once. Have at least sufficient space between the edge of the mat and any spray-extraction (carpet) cleaner or scrubber-dryer. Mop hard floors only up to a foot or so inside the edges of the mat with a damp microfiber flat spray mop. If the color does bleed, the surface must be cleaned instantly using James stain spray (for carpets) or James remover for hard floors.

Avoiding Coir Mat Shedding

Naturally appearing coir doormats outdoor are a good surface to scuff shoes against, but as a natural product will shed, although this will be worse if the coir is inferior quality. Better quality coir mats will shed less than inferior quality coir matting and coir fibers will shed off from the bristled mat and onto flooring areas, making them look slightly messy.

A recessed coir mat or a mat well is one such solution to reduce this to the least, as the mat's edges would be locked and secured in place unlike a loose lay coir mats. This will confine the bristles in the space where they can be hoovered. A daily hoover of your coir mat will extend its life and eliminate any shedding problems.
